Governor of PMA Receives Ambassador of Japan Mr. Takeshi Okubo

H.E. Governor of the PMA received at his office this morning the Ambassador to Japan Mr. Takeshi Okubo and CEO of the Palestinian Industrial Estate and Free Zone Authority (PIEFZA), Dr. Ali Shaath.

The Ambassador of Japan briefed Governor Shawwa on the most important of Japanese-funded projects currently under implementation in co-ordination with PIEFZA, namely the Agro-Industrial Park in Jericho. The project aims at providing support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are regarded as the backbone of the Palestinian economy.

The Ambassador of Japan noted that the infrastructure construction at the project, which commenced in 2006, was complete, in additional to other construction work. H.E. the Ambassador stated that we have a single goal, which is to achieve sustainable development that fosters Palestinian national economy and brings about an independent State of Palestine. He added that certain obstacles, which hindered the progress of the project, have been overcome.

In turn, H.E. the Governor commended the Japanese government for its support to Palestine, both politically and economically. He affirmed PMA’s, as well as the banking sector’s, preparedness to discuss methods of cooperation to further support this important project.

Governor Shawwa reviewed the efforts exerted by the PMA from legislative, regulatory and supervisory points of view in order to keep abreast of the latest global developments in banking, which has repeatedly earned the PMA praise from international financial institutions. Most importantly, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have commended the PMA for its performance, especially in the areas of crisis management and financial inclusion.
