PMA Governor Azzam Shawwa Visits Governor of Central Bank of Jordan Dr. Ziad Fariz
Governor of the PMA, H.E. Azzam Shawwa, visited the Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan, H. E. Dr. Ziad Fariz, in Amman on Tuesday morning. This marks Mr. Shawwa’s first visit to a Central Bank, following his appointment to office as Governor of the PMA last month, pursuant to a Presidential decree.
Mr. Shawwa extended his appreciation to the Central Bank of Jordan for its cooperation with the PMA, from the first days of its foundation. He alluded to the MoU that was signed between the two parties to facilitate cooperation in the area of comprehensive supervision over Jordanian and Palestinian banking institutions operating in both countries. He praised the historical relations that connect both countries and the support that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, never ceases to offer to its sister Palestine in the different forms to attain its freedom and independence.
Dr. Fariz congratulated Mr. Shawwa on the occasion of his appointment to office as Governor of the PMA, wishing him progress and success in serving the best interests of the Palestinian people and economy. Dr. Fariz affirmed the strength and depth of the relation that ties both institutions and peoples, and constant readiness to further develop relations and exchange banking expertise.
It is worth mentioning that the number of Jordanian banks operating in Palestine is seven banks, conducting business through (86) branches and (25) representative offices. Total assets of these banks amount to about USD 5.8 billion that constitute about 47 per cent of assets of banks operating in Palestine. Customer deposits with Jordanian banks operating in Palestine amount to USD 4.7 billion that account for about 49 per cent of total customer deposits with banks operating in Palestine. Facilities granted by these banks amount to USD 2.5 billion constituting around 43 per cent of total direct facilities by banks operating in Palestine.
