The Governor of Palestine Monetary Authority Joins EBRD 2018 Annual Meeting and Business Forum in Jordan

His Excellency Mr. Azzam Shawwa, the Governor of the Palestine Monetary Authority, took part in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) 27thAnnual Meeting and Business Forum to be held today and tomorrow at King Hussein Ibin Talal Convention Center in the Hashemite Kingdome of Jordan. His Majesty King Abdullah II opened the meeting with opening remarks. Sir Suma Chakrabarti the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and senior officials and senior financial directors, businesspeople and civic society representatives, and international and regional media officers also attended the meeting.

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan will address “Future of Work: Tomorrow’s Skills and Employment Challenge,” which is one of the main sessions of the meeting. His Excellency Imad Fakhoury, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation of Jordan will preside over the meeting as Jordan’s Governor in EBRD. 

The main aspect of the EBRD Annual Meeting and Business Forum is Energizing Economieswhere several plenary sessions will be held to address investment opportunities in all countries where EBRD operates from business and economic perspectives, investment in sustainable energy, environment protection, and important investments in infrastructure. 

His Excellency Mr. Azzam Shawwa joined the plenary session of EBRD held today. Mr. Shawwa also participated in the preparatory sessions before the official opening of the meeting including a session titled EBRD in southern and eastern Mediterranean region presided over by Mr. Pierre Heilbronn, EBRD Vice President for Policy and Partnerships and His Excellency Imad Fakhoury, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation of Jordan as well as the Dr. Shehab Marzban, Chairman of Egypt Ventures and Senior Advisor for Economic Affairs to the Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, and Ms. Janet Heckman, the Managing Director for the southern and eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region. 

His Excellency Mr. Shawwa addressed work with EBRD in Palestine where EBRD first started operating in 2017 and launched its first investments in March last year with a $5 million loan to Cairo Amman Bank in Palestine to increase micro and SMEs’ financing. EBRD will also supply Palestine Monetary Authority with technical assistance in the area of managing assets and liabilities. 

Mr. Shawwa affirmed the importance of strategic partnership with EBRD and financing businesses, which enhanced investment opportunities and created jobs and contributed to financial inclusion. Mr. Shawwa also stated that donors’ funding in the current political phase, which Palestine underwent, would help development and growth and energizing of the national economy and encourage Palestinian people to create sustainable entrepreneurial businesses.  

EBRD was founded in 1991 to support market economies and private sector. EBRD started in central and eastern Europe before expanding to include 38 countries around the world.
