PMA Organizes New Series of Awareness-Raising Lectures for University Students

Out of its conviction that promoting banking and financial awareness and education across all segments of Palestinian society is highly important, and in coordination with higher education institutions, the PMA started organizing a new series of awareness-raising lectures for students of Palestinian universities. The first university to hold such a lecture was Hebron University; despite the difficult political circumstances prevailing in the Governorate of Hebron, as well as in the rest of the country. A lecture titled “the Reality of Money Changing Business in the Southern West Bank” was delivered to students of the Faculty of Finance and Management by Mr Jamal Odeh and Mr Awni Al-Ahmad from the Supervision and Inspection Department. The lecture was presented in the presence of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of the Faculty of Finance and Management, as well as a number of members of the teaching staff and students.

Mr Nael Sayed Ahmad welcomed the attendees, stressing the importance of the meeting for the students and thanking the PMA delegation for their visit which took place under currently difficult circumstances. He expressed the readiness of the Faculty to host similar meetings in the future and the desire of Faculty staff and students to visit PMA headquarters to acquire first-hand knowledge about its operations.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr Sami Adwan, thanked both the PMA and the Faculty of Finance and Management for their fruitful cooperation culminating in holding the lecture. He stressed the importance of carrying out further joint activities.

The Dean of the Faculty of Finance and Management, Dr Samir Abu Znaid, explained that this was the first in a series of lectures and meetings, planned to be held during the current semester in cooperation with the PMA. Dr Abu Znaid commended the PMA for its role in stimulating and developing the financial services sector, in general, and the money changing and banking sector, in particular.

Mr. Jamal Odeh, Head of Money Changers’ Division, and Mr Awni Al-Ahmad, Head of Money Exchange Supervision Unit at the PMA, gave a detailed presentation on the role of the PMA in the regulation of the banking sector and the money changing business. They highlighted the significance of financial inclusion and supervision over the various financial sectors in order to maintain financial stability in Palestine.

At the end of the lecture, an open discussion was initiated in which the PMA delegation, the teaching staff and the students took part. Stressing the importance of holding further similar meetings, participants unanimously agreed that such meetings are an opportunity to open the door for scientific discussion at multiple levels, in order to raise awareness of the students of the Palestinian economic reality and the role of the PMA in regulating and supporting the various institutions operating in Palestine.

It should be noted that the PMA is organizing a series of awareness-raising lectures for students of Palestinian universities across the various governorates for the third consecutive year. By doing so, it seeks to enhance the knowledge of students of the faculties of trade, economics and business with respect to the role pf the PMA in regulating the operation of the banking sector and its related key functions for the maintenance of financial stability in the Palestine. It is anticipated that this will help students develop their banking and financial knowledge and education, thereby allowing them to better plan for their future.
