PMA Governor Meets ILO Delegation

H.E. Mr. Azzam Shawwa, the Governor of PMA, met at his office in Ramallah today with delegation from the International Labor Organization (ILO). The delegation, which is headed by Mr. Frank Hagemann, Deputy Regional Director & Director Decent Work Technical Support Team for Arab States of the ILO, is here to examine the economic and social situations of the Palestinian laborers. Mr. Mounir Kleibo, ILO Representative in Jerusalem, ILO delegation, Dr. Shehadah Hussein, Deputy PMA Governor, Dr. Riyad Abu Shehadah, PMA Governor’s Assistant for Financial Stability Affairs, Mr. Ali Far’oun, the Director of the Market Conduct Department at PMA, and Mr. Mohammad Atallah, Director of the Research & Monetary Policy Department at PMA, were also in the meeting. 

The meeting discussed PMA and the banking sector role in economic development and its impact on the Palestinian labor market. H.E. Mr. Azzam Shawwa briefed the meeting on PMA’s procedures to boost economic growth through promoting SMEs and urging the banking system to offer credit facilities to SMEs, which constitute 95% of the Palestinian economy and promoting green loans and renewable energy for their role in sustainable development and providing jobs in Palestine. Mr. Shawwa also pointed out PMA’s role in developing the financial inclusion strategy, which aimed to enhance community’s access, especially marginalized people, to financial services and products to improve their social and economic circumstances and realize financial and social stability.

Mr. Frank Hagemann affirmed the important role of the Palestinian banking sector in promoting economic development. Mr. Frank Hagemann also stated that the aim of the ILO’s delegation to Palestine was to examine and assess the situation of the Palestinian laborers and their families, gather and evaluate information, and to assess the Palestinian institutions’ efforts and their achievements in economic development and improving the situation of labor in Palestine. Mr. Frank Hagemann said the findings of the delegation’s mission in Palestine would be published in the annex of the annual report of ILO’s Director General on the situation of workers of the occupied Arab territories. The report would be discussed by ILO’s June 2018 conference. Mr. Frank Hagemann presented H.E. Dr. Azzam Shawwa with the delegation’s report on labor in Palestine 2017.
