H.E. Shawwa heads the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation’s delegation to the 1st Conference of the International Association of Deposit Insurance

H.E. Mr. Azzam Shawwa, the Governor of the Palestine Monetary Authority and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation headed the delegation of the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation to 1st Conference of the International Association of Deposit Insurance in the Middle East and North Africa held in Casablanca, Morocco during 27 to 29 March, 2017. The Conference was organized by the International Association of Deposit Insurance and the Moroccan Deposit Insurance Corporation. Representatives of central banks and deposit insurance corporations from several countries attended the Conference. 

Mr. Zaher Al Hmouz, the Director General of the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation, signed a joint cooperation agreement between the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Moroccan Deposit Insurance Corporation during the Conference while Mr. Shawwa and the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation’s delegation attended the signing, which was within the framework of Palestine-Moroccan cooperation. The agreement allows for exchange of technical expertise between the two parties to strengthen joint cooperation and support banking functions.

Mr. Shawwa and Mr. Al Hmouz met with H.E. Mr. Abdul Latif Al Jawahiri, the Governor of the Central Bank of Morocco to discuss ways of joint cooperation in banking supervision and exchange of expertise relevant to Islamic banking. Mr. Al Jawahiri welcomed the invitation Mr. Shawwa extended to Moroccan banks to invest in Palestine. He affirmed Morocco’s private and public sectors’ support of Palestine and that Moroccan investment in the Palestinian banking sector would benefit both parties and would support the Palestinian economy especially the banking sector. The meeting also discussed ways of future cooperation between the Monetary Follow-Up Unit and the Association of Banks in Palestine with their Moroccan counterparts and near future signing of joint cooperation agreement.

Mr. Shawwa thanked Mr. Al Jawahiri and the Moroccan King, government, and people and expressed pride in taking part in the Conference and the signing of the joint cooperation agreement, which was a positive step to further the relationship between Morocco and Palestine and permanent partnership for the benefit of Arab banking and enhancing financial stability between both countries, according to Mr. Shawwa.
