Children and Youth Money Week in 2017 activities end

Tomorrow is National Savings Day

PMA ends the Children and Youth Money Week in 2017 activities tomorrow. The activities, which PMA organized in cooperation with the Association of Banks in Palestine, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the UNRWA, started last Sunday. Tomorrow, Thursday, March 16, 2017, shall be a National Savings Day, according to PMA. Banks will explain to people about their programs and banking products in order to enhance the concept of savings among Palestinian citizens. The Children and Youth Money Week in 2017 had a number of activities. The number of students who took part in the activities totaled 600; they came from schools across the West Bank to attend a two-day virtual bank exhibition, which was created as part of the activities of the Children and Youth Money Week in 2017 to show students about the nature and mechanism of banks and banking activities and services delivered to clients. The activities also included organizing visits by bank representatives to approximately 1,235 schools to educate students and hand information bulletins. Students also visited banks to see their departments and how they operated.

Ali Sha’ban, a teacher from Jalazone Basic Boys’ School, said the activities were important because they educated students about banking concepts, services, and products as well as the developed banking technological system and how to benefit from them. This would assist students to financially and economically plan better in the future, it would also help them decide their academic and professional future, according to Ali Sha’ban.

Manal Rahal, a teacher at Araba Basic Girls’ School, said though the banking terms and concepts were difficult for the students to understand, the virtual bank exhibition made easy for them to know the banking services and products, which banks delivered. Students clearly interacted through asking questions. It is necessary to inform students about finance and banking since students studied such topics at schools and universities, said Rahal.

Ro’aa Amer, a student from Marj Alghazal Secondary Girls’ School said “We learned from the visit to the virtual bank exhibition how to banks operate and the services they deliver to people such as checkbooks, loans, money transfers, and electronic services. We also know about credit cards and how they differ and used.”

Raghad Ajlouni, a student at Al-Nahda School in Jerusalem, said “I learnt how to save my money through depositing it in a bank account. Saving money helps me realize my future plans such as continuing my education, buying a house and a car, and to start an investment business. Saving money in a bank protects it from damage, theft, and fire.”

Sa’eed Bakeer, a student at Jalazone Basic Boys’ School, said “I got to know when I visited the virtual bank exhibition the electronic services banks delivered to people, credit cards, ATM service, as well as the transfers and how these services saved time and effort.”

Raghad Tarazi, a student at Al-Sayida Zeinab School in Tafooh, Hebron, said “I did not know how checks were used or written or the date when they were cashed or expired. I learnt how to use the ATM and the differences between Islamic and commercial banks. Now I have an idea about the rules of dealing with banks and their services and the role of PMA, which is in charge of controlling and regulating banks.”

PMA organizes the Children and Youth Money Week annually. This has been an initiative of PMA and partners since 2011. The organization of this event usually coincides with the activities of the Global Money Week, which takes place every year on March 15 and aims to enhance the financial and banking culture in the society especially among children and youth and prepares them to wisely plan their financial future.

PMA received the Global Money Week 2013 for organizing the best financial and banking awareness-raising activity in the Middle East.
