PMA Governor Participates in Annual Arab Banking Conference

Dr. Jihad Al Wazir- PMA Governor; participated in the activities of the Arab Banking Conference in Amman. The conference was organized by the Union of Arab Banks in cooperation with the Central Bank of Jordan during the period 16-17 April, 2014 under the auspices of Premier Abdullah Ensour and entitled “Strategies for the Development of Arab Economies”. 

Al. Wazir chaired the Wednesday Opening session entitled “The Current Status of Arab Economies: the Active and the Struggling”, in which the speakers were H.E. Munir Abdel Nour, Egyptian Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Mohammad Baasiri, Vice Governor of Central Bank of Lebanon, Mr. Ali Al Hibri, Vice Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Mr. Nemeh Sabbagh, CEO of Arab Bank and Mr. Tirad Mahmoud, CEO of Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank.

The conference discussed the legislation and reforms required for the development of Arab economies, the role of financial markets in stimulating the economy, the role of small and medium enterprises in economic development as well as the current status of Arab economies, the active and the struggling. Participants included Governors of Arab central banks, Arab Ministers of Trade, Economy, Supply and Finance, representatives of Arab stock markets and banks, economists and investors. 

Topics discussed by participants included the means and measures to establish reform strategies which stimulate economic growth, the role of banks and financial institutions in economic development, the establishment of an Arab fund for re-construction in addition to the creation of a favourable climate of cooperation between the public and private sectors. Al Wazir also attended the Arab Banks Association 41^st meeting of the General Assembly held during the same period.
